To create your menu items, you have to create a category first and then begin to add menu items inside each category.
Categories are simply the umbrellas that each meal types fall under. That means you will need to identify the different categories that your meals fall in. This can be anything ranging from Main Menu, Sides, Combos, and Starters to Pasta, Rice, Pastries, and so on.
You start by creating your categories and then you can go ahead to add the menu items that fall under each category.
Please see this guide for creating your categories.
If your menu items’ prices are exclusive of pack costs, then you will also need to add packs by creating your available pack options. If you already include pack costs in your menu items prices (i.e. pack is free), then you can skip the section on creating packs.
Creating your menu items
After creating your categories and packs, the next thing is to start adding menu items to each category.
Click on the Edit icon (that looks like a pencil) beside a category. This opens the category so you can add your menu items.
Click on the “+” sign under the category to start adding menu items that fall under this umbrella.
Input the menu item name (E.g. Chicken Wrap)
Input the description. Your description should explain what the menu item entails and the major ingredients in the meal. This is to ensure that customers know what they are getting and can avoid getting meals that contain anything they may be allergic to.
See below sample description for a menu item called “Chicken Wrap”Good description - Grilled chicken, carrot, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, cheese, homemade spicy sauce, and sweet corn wrapped in wheat tortilla bread.
Bad description - Tortilla bread, chicken, veggies, and sauce
Upload the menu item image. Ensure you use an image that shows the product clearly and matches what the customer will be receiving. Please do not use an image that exaggerates what the customer will receive. This is to prevent customer dissatisfaction from unmet expectations.
Input the product’s price and price description. The price description explains what the price is for e.g. per portion, per spoon, per plate, etc.
Select Pack. If this menu item has to come in a pack and the cost of the menu item does not already include pack, this is where you select a pack for the item from the packs you have previously created.
Add an option Group. If your menu item has multiple variants or options, you can create them under this section. Learn more about creating option groups in this guide.
Mark Item in Stock - If this item is in stock, toggle this button on.
Guide to creating a good menu
When uploading your menu, it's important to ensure that the menu accurately represents your offerings and entices customers to order from your restaurant. Here are some guidelines to help you upload your menu properly:
High-quality food images: Capture enticing, high-resolution images of your menu items. People often choose their meals based on visual appeal, so having appetizing photos can significantly impact customer interest and increase orders. Ensure your images depict exactly what the customer will actually receive.
Detailed descriptions: Craft compelling and concise descriptions for each menu item. Highlight the key ingredients, flavors, and unique aspects of the dish. Use descriptive language to make the items more appealing and give customers a clear idea of what to expect.
Categorize your menu: Organize your menu items into logical categories to make it easier for customers to navigate. Common categories include appetizers, main meals, desserts, drinks, pastries, etc. Ensure that each menu item is assigned to the appropriate category.
Customization options: If your menu items have customizable features (e.g., toppings, sauces, spice levels), clearly define the available options and any additional costs associated with them. This allows customers to personalize their orders based on their preferences. You can set this up using option groups.
Allergen and dietary information: If applicable, provide information about common allergens present in your dishes (e.g., nuts, dairy, gluten). This helps customers with specific dietary requirements or allergies make informed decisions.
Regular updates: Keep your menu up to date by regularly reviewing and updating it. Ensure that any changes in pricing, availability, or menu items are reflected accurately. This helps maintain customer satisfaction and avoids any confusion or disappointment.
